I just got my computer back from getting a Reload Deluxe, where are all my old documents? |
Okay when Safe Haven Computers does a Reload Deluxe, we make an exact duplicate (Ghost) of your hard drive before we reformat yours. Now when Windows XP has been reloaded onto a customers hard drive we then copy your old Documents and Settings folder into a folder found at C:\Old Data. Normally there is a shortcut on your desktop however not always. If you do not know your old My Documents folder can be found at C:\Old Data\Documents and Settings\Owner*\My Documents
* Whatever your old log in name was will be the name of this folder in the Docs and Settings folder. So if you have multiple users, their My Documents will be under their names. |
I just got my computer back from getting a Sysclean done, why is my System Restore turned off? |
We turn off System Restore as the first step of a System Clean. If you have particular virus or spyware on your computer system they can hide themselves in System Restore. So when you think you have cleaned them all out, the next time you reboot the computer it comes right back on because System Restore brings back anything in its possession that has been deleted. Turning System Restore off makes sure that once spyware and viruses are cleaned off the system, they won't come back. |
My computer won't turn on! What do I do if I press the power button and nothing happens (no lights or fans)? |
First, check the power cord. Make sure it is plugged firmly into the outlet and the back of the PC. Also, try plugging the cord directly into the wall outlet instead of using a surge protector. Test the wall outlet with another appliance such as a lamp. Also try using the power cord from your monitor; it should be the same type. If none of these help, you may need a qualified computer technician to repair your PC. |
| My computer won't start up! What do I do if I press the power button and nothing appears on the monitor? |
Check that the monitor is plugged in and try plugging the monitor directly into a wall outlet. Check that the reset button isn't stuck. This will cause a computer to not start up properly. If neither of these helps, a qualified technician may be needed to repair your computer. |
| My computer starts up but when it is just about to start Windows, the screen goes blank and it still plays a startup sound. |
This is usually cause by selecting a display setting that is incompatible with your monitor. Press F8 when your computer displays "Starting Windows..." and your computer will start in "Safe Mode". This may take several minutes longer than a regular startup. In Safe Mode, you can change the display settings to 640 by 480 with 256 colors and then restart your PC normally. |
| I don't seem to get any sound from my speakers. |
This is usually caused by the speakers being plugged into the incorrect audio jack. Most sound cards have 4 audio jacks: Line Out, Speaker Out, Line In, and Mic In. If the speakers are in either input jack, no sound will come out. Speakers should be plugged into the green audio jack. If they still do not work, plug a pair of headphones into the green jack to verify that the sound card is working. DO NOT wear the headphones! The volume may be very high! If possible, test the speakers with a different source such as a Walkman. If your sound card is not working properly, you may need a technician to repair your PC. |
| I can't dial onto the internet! What can I do? |
Check the phone line by plugging a phone into the same jack you are trying to use to dial onto the internet. If you get a dial tone, try creating a Dial-Up Networking item to call another number such as a second phone line. If the other phone rings, it may be a problem with your internet provider. Contact your provider for any special network settings that may be necessary. |
| Internet Explorer always gives an illegal operation when I double-click the "E" icon on my desktop. According to the "Details" section it is in "Shell32.dll" What causes this?
|
There is most likely an error in a registry setting. NOTE: When editing the registry, be very careful. A damaged registry will prevent Windows from booting. If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry, have a technician do the editing for you. Editing the Registry: Go to "Run" on the start menu and type "regedit" (without quotes). Click "OK" and the Registry Editor will open. Click the plus sign next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" then "Software", "Microsoft" and "Internet Explorer". Click on " Main " and on the right-hand side, scroll down until you see a line called "Search Bar". Highlight "Search Bar" and hit delete to erase the entry. If you do not feel comfortable doing this but still need to use Internet Explorer before you can get the PC to a technician, right-click on the "E" icon and select the "Explore" option. Internet Explorer will start with a slightly different layout but is still usable. |
| My e-mail worked fine before but now when I check my mail, I get a message saying "Invalid username or password". Did my password change? |
This is usually caused by a mail server being down. Do not retype your password or change anything. Try checking your mail again in a couple of hours. |
| Windows gives strange errors about "illegal operations". Can I do anything to help this? |
Unless the error is specific to a particular program (such as only when using Excel or only in Winamp) or it only happens under certain circumstances (for example: only when connecting to the internet), the best way to remedy the situation is by reinstalling Windows. This is referred to as a "reload" which entails erasing the hard drive (which will wipe out all data!) and installing Windows from scratch. Safe Haven Computers offers a reload service with options such as backing up data or downloading the latest drivers for your hardware. |
I just installed an Ethernet Card into my Computer and Windows does not see it in Device Manager. |
If you have installed a card into your Windows 98 or Windows XP system, and you turn on the system windows should automatically notice there is a new piece or hardware connected to the PCI bus (Whether or not it recognizes the driver for it Windows should still at least see that it is there and prompt you). If windows does not recognize this device on boot up into windows, check your Device Manager. In Device Manager (Control Panel > System) there should be a yellow "?" with "Unknown Devices" next to it. Simple press the "+" and right-click on the unknown device and choose "Update Driver" or "Install Driver" and follow the on screen directions to locate the drive on the provided disc or floppy. If you check Device Manager and there is no yellow ? and your ethernet card is not recognized under "Network Devices" then try changing the location of the Ethernet card to another PCI slot on your motherboard. |
